Storm Drain Replacement – Anchored Soldier Pile

Owner – University of North Carolina

General Contractor – Mid-Atlantic Infrastructures

Description
Subsurface Construction installed anchored soldier piles to protect critical infrastructure during a storm drain replacement project.

The shoring was designed to meet performance criteria set by the client to protect an existing essential power duct bank. The performance of the shoring was monitored by surveying the existing duct bank and the excavation shoring, taking inclinometer readings and strain gauge readings.

The data collected from the surveying and instrumentation plan was used to verify assumed soil properties through back analysis with the goal of making quick adjustments in construction methods if required.

The 40-foot deep storm drain pipe was replaced with ductbank movements being limited to that required by the project.
